Honeybee News - Backdrops

We drew a backdrop that was yellow and black.  The black was meant to look like jail bars.  Then we stuck the varroa mite poster on top.

Luke, Jack and Nathan helped to design the backdrop with all the food.  This was meant to show that if there were no honeybees to pollinate flowers we wouldn't have all of this food.

Up Close with a Honeybee...

Can you see the pollen? Honey bees are V.I.P's.  That means very important
pollinators.  Guess how many wings are on a honey bee...
Honeybee can see in UV. Click here to see how bees find flowers...
This honeybee has chewed wings because of varroa mite.  The varroa mite sucks their blood and they get diseases!

Honey tasting...

Nicholas: 'I like the High Peak honey.'  Lily: 'The Manuka honey is yummy!'
Summer: 'The Manuka honey is really healthy.'  Maliyah: 'My favorite type of honey is Beech Forest honey, it tastes delicious!'  Leyam: 'I like the comb honey because it is sweet!'
Nathan: 'My favorite was the natural comb honey because it was sugary.'
Chloe & Charlotte: 'I didn't like the honey because it was too strong and minty.'

What plants do honeybees like?

Just like you prefer to eat an apple instead of a banana honeybees like plants that are rich in nectar.  Click here for more plants that bees like.

Lego movie...

In the holidays we went to the Lego movie.  It was awesome because it had special effects.  There was stuff that we use like the Krakle.  It was just craft glue.  We also went to Hamner.  We went to the pools and had a family reunion.  I stayed at a friends house and his name was Matthew.

Thematic Workshop...

In order to understand what an ecosystem is we need to learn about food chains and the food lifecycle of an ecosystem.

Task 1: Work with a buddy to use the iPad dictionary to find the meaning of the words: habitat, carnivore, herbivore and omnivore.

Task 2: Watch a youtube video on animals that are omnivores, herbivores and carnivores.

Task 3:  Work with a buddy to show others what these words mean.

Below are some examples of what the children came up with…

What we think we know...

We created popplets to share what we think about living things.

It's a Livin' Thing… Living World - How do they live?  How do they survive? Where do they live?  What to they need to survive?

Strength Bear Skull...

My strength is sport.  I"m good at rugby because I can tackle, pass and I'm good at scrums.

Nathan's digital pet day 2013

My pets names are Sparky, Candis, Stacey, Genie and my two hens died.  I got Sparky from the SPCA.  He was found in Burwood Forest and he is 4 years old.  He likes to play X-Box games.  Genie likes to sleep in my draw at night and she is 13 years old. She has black hair and grass green eyes. Also I have two hens that do nothing but eat.

Fuppet Fuzzy

Fuzzy has smooth yellow skin.  Fuzzy has black and white hair, a red mouth and a chocolate black tongue.  He has a smooth white nose, as white as the fluffy clouds in the sky.  Fluffy is 11 years old and has eyes as big as a ping pong balls.

Fluffy is as happy as a cheerful chipmunk.  He is fantastic at art, likes building lego and loves going outside on the trampoline in the sun.

He lives in a two storey house with his parents.  He does acting for fun in the holidays.  He likes to do art, trampolining, skateboarding, movie making and sky diving.

Measurement...

In school on Monday we did measurements.  We measured poles, tyres and heaps of other things round the school.

Nathan's Waipara Camp

When I went to camp I did bivvy building and it was my favourite.  We did it on the second day. Riker was my buddy.  I liked the lake the most out of the water slide.  Mainly because it was 2m deep.

Points of view using Augmented Reality...

Can you name the different points of view?

What do we think will be the future of this technology?

I think you will be able to try on the shoe and see if it looks good.  Campbell

Watching a movie trailer.   Jacob

You could go shopping online, print out the item of clothing you like, and see if it looks good on you!  I think there will be a market for augmented t-shirts. Imagine if you could take a picture from a realtor magazine, view the image...then walk through the house.  No more need for open homes!  Elizabeth

I think they will be on all book covers.  There could be pictures on food you could scan.  Tasman

I think you'll be able to keep it 3D and teleport it to different places.  Maisie

I think you could put this in a shop, and you would see the 3D food things popping out.  Zander

Scan the picture, and the food comes up.  You can then taste it and see if you would want to buy it!  Nathan

The Variety Bash at Freeville School

On our court we had a Variety Bash and the whole school was there.  They were raising money for kids all over New Zealand.  It was their first time at Freeville School.  They gave us lots of gifts.  They were raised thirteen million dollars so far.  It was lots of fun!  We got stickers, lollies, bracelets, popcorn and corn tubes.
